Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Glasgow MT
244 PM MST Wed Jan 14 2026
.KEY MESSAGES...
1) Mild temperatures fade tonight with patchy fog in areas with
lingering snow cover.
2) Strong northwest winds are expected Thursday into Friday. High
Wind Watches have been issued for all of NE Montana.
3) Near average temperatures late this week through this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
Patchy river valley fog remains a concern this evening for
locations with lingering snow cover, such as around Glasgow and
Wolf Point. Then, a Canadian surface low will drop into the
Dakotas on Thursday. This low pressure center will deepen as it
propagates southeast through Minnesota at the same time as ridging
strengthens over the Canadian coast. This tight pressure gradient
coupled with push of warm air advection and a quick turnover to
strong cold air advection serves to generate strong winds over
much of the CWA Thursday afternoon into Friday. High Wind Watches
have been issued for all, one for the central/eastern zones (the
more prolonged, higher impact event) beginning late Thursday
morning, and one for the western zones (a terrain influenced, more
typical event) Thursday night. Both hazards are likely to be
expanded in area and time. Chances are high (>80%) for gusts of
58+ mph for areas such as the Little Rockies, Big Sheeps and
Sheridan county. Elsewhere, widespread high winds are less likely,
but still a medium (40-70%) chances for getting at least a few
high wind gusts between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon.
A low probability, high impact forecast challenge for travel
impacts is the snow chances in the eastern zones Thursday night
that will be coupled with areas of strong winds. Current WSSI puts
parts of Daniels, Sheridan, and eastern Roosevelt under moderate
impacts. While this outcome is unlikely, it`s worth monitoring.
There is some potential for 850mb frontogenesis to develop, but
dry conditions are currently limiting snowfall.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Blended higher resolution guidance through Thursday for winds and
wind gusts, along with blending in the NBM 90th percentile
particularly for wind gusts through Friday.
There is high confidence in winds, with the High Wind Watch likely
needing an upgrade to a warning for at least some of the zones.
Low confidence in measurable snowfall Thursday night occurring to
be a visibility concern for blowing snow.

becoming stronger. Gusty to strong NW winds 20 to 35 kts to begin
